IDO launched this initiative to explore the possibility of our community serving as a pilot neighborhood for the former mayor’s Indy GreenPrint program.
The Irvington Green Initiative Committee plans to invite collaboration with existing entities like Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, the Irvington Garden Club, neighborhood churches and local merchants as we work toward “greening” Irvington. Our goal is to take an apolitical, positive approach toward encouraging people to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle.
We expect to serve as a clearinghouse for environmental resources as well as a forum for discussion and learning.
While projects are still in the planning stages, our top priorities are:
- Recycling Initiative – exploring bringing expanded recycling service to Irvington
- Recognition Program – implementing Green Homes/Blocks/Churches/Businesses and Backyard Wildlife Certification
- Rain Gardens – exploring natural ways to manage stormwater runoff
- Speaker/Film/Workshop series – bringing environmental experts to local venues
- Tree care in Ellenberger Park – mulching and staking neglected young trees
- Plastic Reduction Campaign – working with area merchants to promote shopping bag reuse
- Bicycling Campaign – encouraging biking through various innovative projects
Future projects under consideration include:
- Green Tour – incorporating environmental elements into popular Irvington tours such as the Benton House Home Tour and Garden Club Garden Tour
- Anti-littering Campaign
- Carpool Campaign
- School Gardens
