Irvington Branch Library
The Irvington Branch Library has been serving the Irvington community in its current location since 2001. However, its presence in the community dates back to 1903, when the parents of the late Bona Thompson donated funds to Butler College for a library in memory of their daughter. That building is now called the Bona Thompson Center and houses the Irvington Historical Society. The library moved in 1914 and again in 1921. In 1956, workers completed construction on a new library at 5427 E. Washington St. and named it for Hilton U. Brown, a prominent early resident. That building remains in use as the IPS Early Childhood Education Center.
The spacious new 16,000-square-foot Irvington library at 5625 E. Washington St. offers more than 65,000 books, periodicals, DVDs, videos and CDs as well as year-round free programming for children and adults. Twenty public computers provide Internet access and the online catalog offers access to the complete IMCPL collection. The Hilton U. Brown Community Room, and the Cory O’Dell Storytelling Room provide comfortable venues for library and community events. In addition, the library features changing exhibits by local artists and information about Irvington and citywide events.
